Ramji Rao Speaking (1989) is one of the all time best Malayalam comedy films and though an inspired film by itself, it went on to be remade successfully in Tamil (Arangetra Velai), Hindi (Hera Pheri ) and not so successfully in Telugu (Dhanalakshmi I Love You). Ramji Rao Speaking was directed by the dynamic duo Siddique-Lal and the film made the 3 main lead characters-Gopalakrishnan (Mukesh), Balakrishnan (Sai Kumar) and Mannar Mathai (Innocent) very popular. The film went on to receive a sequel in 1995 i.e Mannar Mathai Speaking, which though not as successful commercially as the previous film has gone on to become quite popular over the years. Mannar Mathai Speaking was written by Siddique-Lal and though the producer Mani C.Kappan is credited as the director as well, it is rumored that Siddique was the actual director behind the same. Priyadarshan’s Bhagam Bhag had borrowed liberally from this film (along with the Marathi hit Bindhaast).
Now nearly 19 years after Mannar Mathai Speaking released, the 3rd installment in the franchise i.e Mannar Mathai Speaking 2 is coming up for release on 24th January. The film is directed by Mamas who has directed films like Paapi Appacha (2010) and Cinema Company (2012) earlier and produced by Siby Thottupuram and Joby Mundamattom. The film not only brings back the trio of Gopalakrishnan, Balakrishnan and Mannar Mathai but also has some of the iconic characters from the previous 2 films- Garvasees Aashan (Janardhanan), Mahendra Varma (Biju Menon), Ramji Rao (Vijayaraghavan) etc. The rest of the star cast includes Kalabhavan Shajon, Shammi Thilakan, Aparna Gopinath, Indrans etc. The film has music by Rahul Raj while Vishnu Narayanan is the DOP and Ratheesh Raj is the editor. Let us see if the franchise continues to appeal to today’s audience even today and if this film can turn out as entertaining as the previous two.
