‘Avengers: Endgame’ Reveal Alternate Iron Man and Spider-Man Reunion
Avengers: Endgame originally had a different on-screen reunion between Peter Parker and Tony Stark. A lot about the epic movie has been revealed over the last several months. Marvel Studios, along with the cast and crew, had to keep their mouths shut about it for years. So it must be nice to finally be able to talk about it now. Editor Jeff Ford recently sat down with the creative team behind the movie and revealed some of the things that didn’t make it into the final cut.
One of the boldest parts in Infinity War was when Peter Parker turned to dust in Tony Stark’s arms. It was heartbreaking for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans to see. So a reunion in Avengers: Endgame was always going to be a very big deal. Originally, the Russo Brothers had something else in mind for the reunion, which they shot and ultimately ended up not using. Jeff Ford explains.
“The first time we shot it, Peter and Tony reunite and Pepper’s nearby, and Tony goes, ‘Uh, Peter, do you know Pepper?” “Nice to meet you!” It’s one of those crazy meet-cutes in the middle of a fight. He hugs him and they have this thing. But it felt very incidental, like they ran into each other at an airport or something.
We watched it, and they were both great in the scene. But it was like a comedy scene, so it had this schtick quality to it. By the way, we did not yet know how powerful Peter disappearing was (in Infinity War) when we shot that first version. We had shot it, I think, but we hadn’t tested it, we hadn’t lived with it and actually done the (effect) of (him) going away, so when the audience had that reaction, we’re like, this reunion is different now. It’s a different thing.”
It sounds like the Russo Brothers made the right decision when choosing the reunion between Spider-Man and Iron Man that they used in the final Avengers: Endgame cut. When there’s so much stuff going on, like the final battle scenes. It has to be hard to throw in a heartwarming reunion right in the middle of the action. The first Peter Parker and Tony Stark reunion would have made sense, due to everything that was going on around the battle field, but the warmer version was the way to go.
Jeff Ford also revealed that there was almost a hilarious callback to Ant-Man and the Wasp in Avengers: Endgame too. The scene would have taken place during the massive battle when Hope van Dyne and Scott Lang are reunited. The two were going to hotwire the van together and the Partridge Family song. “Come On Get Happy” was going to blare through the speakers, catching the attention of the Outriders.
In the end, Jeff Ford and the rest of the Marvel Studios creative team succeeded in pulling off a massive feat. Avengers: Endgame was able to satisfy most fans and critics, who were skeptical of anything topping Infinity War. Everything came to a satisfying close, for the most part. Fans are still bummed that Tony Stark had to die, but it was the way things needed to go. Peter Parker will help lead the team from now on.
